As A&S Recruitment celebrates its 20th anniversary, Porttalk sits down with its founder and managing director, Amanda Harrold, to discuss two decades of success, challenges, and the ever-evolving world of recruitment.
Amanda, what inspired you to start A&S Recruitment, and what were your ambitions when you launched the business?
I had been working for an independent agency for over twenty years, and as I approached my 40th birthday, I felt the time was right to take the leap. The employment market was thriving, and my reputation in the industry gave me the confidence to take the leap. My dad was a huge inspiration—he always said it’s unlikely to happen if you haven’t started your own business by 40. That pushed me to take the “now or never” approach, and here we are 20 years later!
Looking back, what key milestones or achievements are you most proud of?
Winning and being re-awarded multiple tenders with the Port of Felixstowe over more than a decade has been a highlight. Surviving the financial crash of 2008 and navigating the challenges of 2009 and 2010 taught us resilience. Similarly, overcoming the turbulence of COVID-19 was a significant achievement.
Beyond these, maintaining long-standing relationships with clients who trust us for repeat business has been incredibly rewarding. The recruitment industry has evolved, and staying ahead of those changes has been a proud part of our journey.
Over the past 20 years, what are the most significant changes you’ve seen in recruitment?
Technology has revolutionised the industry. Recruitment has transformed from a largely manual, transactional process to a more strategic discipline. Advances like AI have enabled faster, more accurate talent searches while allowing recruiters to focus on human insight and connection.
How different is running a recruitment agency today compared to when you started?
We didn’t even have mobile phones or answering machines when I started. I remember hand-delivering notes to candidates’ homes, asking them to call me back. Filing cabinets full of handwritten applications were the norm, and every new vacancy meant sifting through them manually.
Our recruitment software electronically stores candidate information and refines searches in seconds. This pace is much quicker, requiring a more reactive approach. However, despite these advancements, I still value meeting every candidate face-to-face. It’s about personal connection, which remains at the heart of what we do.
Have candidate expectations or employer demands changed significantly over the years?
Absolutely. Thanks to technology, both expect results much faster now. Employers want the perfect candidate yesterday, and candidates expect instant updates. Managing those expectations is key.
Reaching 60 this year is a personal milestone. How has your approach to work evolved?
I’ve learned to work smarter. No one wants to be a “busy fool.” I enjoy my job as much now as when I first started, but I’ve become better at prioritising and focusing on what truly matters.
What advice would you give to someone starting in recruitment today?
Recruitment is dynamic and rewarding, but it takes effort and adaptability. Celebrate your wins, stay positive through setbacks, and keep moving forward. It’s a journey worth taking.
What do you think has been the secret to A&S Recruitment’s longevity and success?
We genuinely care. It’s not just about filling a role; it’s about finding the right fit for both the candidate and the employer. Long-term relationships with clients and a fantastic team have also been critical. A&S wouldn’t be where it is today without the collective effort of everyone involved.
How do you ensure A&S Recruitment stays ahead of industry trends?
We stay actively involved in local industry groups and associations, gather feedback from clients and candidates, and constantly monitor market trends. Adaptability has been key to delivering consistent value.
What’s next for A&S Recruitment as you celebrate 20 years?
First, I’m treating myself to a sunny holiday in the Maldives. Beyond that, I can’t wait to reveal some exciting projects in the pipeline.
A highlight is the launch of our new, state-of-the-art website, designed to enhance the experience for both candidates and clients. Fully automated, the platform offers seamless navigation. With advanced features that streamline job searches and application processes, the website saves time for candidates while providing clients with faster access to the best talent. This proactive approach reflects our commitment to innovation and delivering exceptional service, making connecting the right people with the right opportunities more straightforward than ever.
How will the recruitment industry evolve in the next five to ten years?
AI and automation will play an even more significant role, and we’ll see a more substantial shift toward skills-based hiring. Recruitment will continue to blend technology with the human touch.
Recruitment is fundamentally about people. What’s your favourite part of working in this field?
Even after 40 years, I still get a buzz from placing someone in a new role. It’s incredibly fulfilling.
Can you share a memorable story that encapsulates what A&S Recruitment stands for?
One story stands out. Over 28 years ago, I placed a candidate in an import clerk role. That candidate worked their way up and now owns the company. They still come to us when they need staff. Moments like these remind me why I do what I do.
A&S Recruitment’s journey over the past 20 years is a testament to Amanda Harrold’s passion, resilience, and commitment to people. Here’s to the next chapter of their success.
