Are you looking to get your first job in shipping? A&S Recruitment’s Amanda Harrold shares her insights and top tips for securing your first break into one of the UK’s most innovative and fast-moving industries.  Amanda says: “Unfortunately for all of us, there is no golden rule or hack to getting a job, but below are some tactics to give you the best chance of gaining your first opportunity in shipping.”

  1. Research and Identify Shipping Companies:

Start by researching and identifying shipping companies that operate in your desired location. Look for companies that align with your career goals, interests, and skills.

  1. Update Your CV:

Tailor your CV to highlight relevant skills and experiences that apply to the shipping industry. Emphasise any previous work experience in logistics, supply chain management, transportation, or related fields. Include any certifications, training, or specialised knowledge that may be valuable to shipping companies.

  1. Networking:

Networking can be a valuable tool for finding job opportunities. Attend industry events, join professional organisations related to shipping or logistics, and connect with professionals in the field through platforms like LinkedIn. Let your network know that you’re interested in working in the shipping industry, and they can provide insights or refer you to job openings.

  1. Job Search Platforms:

Utilise online job search platforms to explore job openings in shipping companies. Specialized job boards for the logistics and transportation industry can be excellent resources for finding relevant job postings.

  1. Company Websites:

Visit shipping companies’ websites to check their career pages. Many companies advertise job openings on their websites. Look for sections like “Careers,” “Jobs,” or “Work with Us” to find information about current job opportunities and application processes

  1. Prepare for Interviews:

Once you find suitable job openings and apply, preparing for interviews is essential. Research the company thoroughly to understand its operations, services, and values. Prepare answers to common interview questions and be ready to discuss your relevant skills, experiences, and how you can contribute to the company’s success.

  1. Highlight Transferable Skills:

Even if you have yet to gain direct experience in the shipping industry, emphasise any transferable skills you possess. This can include problem-solving, attention to detail, organisation, communication, and the ability to work in a team. Show how these skills can be applied to the shipping industry and contribute to the company’s operations.

  1. Be Open to Entry-Level Positions:

If you’re new to the shipping industry, consider being open to entry-level positions that can provide you with valuable experience and opportunities for growth. These positions can serve as stepping stones to more advanced roles within the company.

  1. Continuous Learning:

Stay updated with industry trends and advancements in shipping and logistics. Consider pursuing certifications or additional training courses relevant to the industry. This can enhance your knowledge and make you a more competitive candidate for shipping company positions.

“Remember, the shipping industry is bursting with diverse roles and responsibilities. These include but aren’t restricted to operations, logistics, customer service, and management. Be sure to tailor your approach based on the specific job you’re interested in and be persistent in your job search.  But always remember, every employer is looking for that person with enthusiasm and a genuine interest in the position available. Finding that dream job is all about the effort you’re prepared to invest in convincing an employer you are the best fit for the job and their company culture.”
